Best Smart Home EV Chargers UK

The increase in the use of electric vehicles around the globe has inadvertently affected the surge in the development of smart EV charging stations. The rise in the popularity of these electric-powered vehicles necessitates the market for the accessories and infrastructure that are required to support the cars. One of such needed accessories is an electric vehicle charging station.

An electric charging station is a unit designed to deliver the electrical charge to the battery of your electric vehicle.  It does this by converting AC current that is found in the home into the DC energy needed by the vehicle batteries to function optimally. Its primary function is to deliver power to the battery for storage.

An electric vehicle charging station has different pseudonyms which include; EV charging stations, Charging points, Charge point, ECS (electronic charging station), Electronic recharging point and EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment). Charging stations are categorised into four types. The Residential charging stations, charging while parked, Fast charging at public charging stations and battery swaps or charges in under 15 minutes.

This article is, however, based on smart home charging stations. The residential charging stations permits its owner to plug in when he or she returns home. The car is usually charged overnight, and it does not require a user authentication nor metering, but it may require wiring a personal circuit. Some of this home portable chargers are wall mounted.   To charge at home, some Electric vehicle chargers have onboard converters plugged into a standard electrical outlet or a high-capacity appliance outlet.

Despite various available means of charging your car, it is always better and comfortable to charge at home. Your car is supposed to have a plug which you only have to connect to any outlet in your house. This is called level 1 charger. It does not have fast charging ability. However, there is a piece of good news here. There are other options for you to get your car charged at a fast rate without spending much.

One benefit you get by having a home EV charging point is that you spend less and at the same time, you have access to a fast and safe charge without worry. With a level 2 charger, you can easily get your car charged in couples of hours. Charging in public places attracts per hour billing while charging at home will prevent such charges. Also, there is convenience when you install an electric vehicle charging station at home. You charge at your own pace.   Having an EV charger at home has its usefulness, and it is of great benefit. Moreover, there are certain features that one must consider before one acquires an EV charger. Below are what you need to consider.

Features you should consider when buying an EV charger

  • The power output capacity: before you buy your Smart EV charging station, you need to check out the output capacity of the charger. How powerful it is and how much can it give to your car? These are the questions that should run through your mind when you plan to get one EV charger for yourself. Electric cars charge at different rate and capacity. Some are faster while some are not. The power needed to charge ranges from 3.7 KW to 22 KW, and this depends on the inbuilt onboard charger of a particular electric car. There are level 1 and level 2 ev chargers you can get. Level 1 is quite cheaper; however, it is slow and will take a long time to power your vehicle fully. Level 2, on the other hand, is costly, but it delivers more power and charges your vehicle faster. Well, there is also the level 3 charger, but it is so powerful that it is not permitted for use at home.
  • The length of the Power cable: you need to consider the location of the mounted power outlet. How far is it to your vehicle’s location? You can always get a long power cable for your charger regardless of the distance between your vehicle and the charger. There is provision for 25-foot long power cable which is the maximum length you can get. This means that why you install the Electric vehicle charging station into your home, you need to be mindful of your car location.
  • Consider your connection model (Hard wired or Plug?): you need to look your preference of which connection model you would prefer. How will your EV charger be connected to the power supply? A hardwired charger is quite difficult to install, but it is cheaper, and it is more secure and difficult if not impossible to steal. It has a direct connection to the power supply, while the plugged also known as plug and play model requires a suitable power outlet that it can fit into. It is easier to install, quite cost and is not secured, unlike the hardwired model.
  • Consider various high ends: this includes the time delay, remote charging monitoring and remote activation. All these are the smart features that are not available on all chargers. You need to lookout for those chargers which have them before considering which you would buy or not. These features are premium added, and they serve different functions. The time delay switch helps set the time you start charging your vehicle, while remote activation control is advanced with its use of WiFi and connectivity. One thing you must know before you go for these is that, though they are excellent features to have, they add to the price of the charger.

Consider the EV charging station manufacturer: finally, you need to consider the right manufacturer for the electric car. You need to check out if the manufacturer has the approval and listing of prominent automobile manufacturers. This will help you to identify which charger is compatible with your car.

I have five top station points you can use in your home below. Read them carefully to get access to their functions and capacities.

Why You Should Get a Charging Station

Are you confronted with the question of why you have to get a charging point fixed at your home? At least, there are lot of available means of charging your EV. So, why bother about getting a charging station for your home. This is a possible thought you might have, however, there are certain benefits you stand to get by installing a charging station in your home and you cannot enjoy such benefits if you use public charging points. You can charge your Electric car from the mains through an extension lead, you can charge it at a public charging point and you can install a charging point at home. Below are the reasons you should get a charging station installed in your home.

  • Home EV Charging Stations cost less

The home EV charging stations are less expensive because the OLEV grant often gives every buyer a 75% discount of the actual cost of the charger. The amount paid by OLEV is as much as £500 and this makes every other expenses lesser. Though you will have to pay for the installation, your subsequent payments will be much cheaper. The cost you spend afterwards may be as low as £3 depending on the model of your car and your electricity tariff.

  • It is more Convenient to use

Having an EV charging station fixed in your home makes you charge your electric vehicle at your own pace without any need to do it out of compulsion or fear. It gives you a sense of absolute control without relying on any public charging station to charge your electric vehicle.  The convenience you get by having an EV charging station fixed at your home includes, not waiting in line for the person ahead of you to finish charging before you charge your car. Home charging makes it feasible for you to charge your car at home in the evening after the day’s work while you do other things and you may only be required to charge your car in public charging stations when you are on a journey.

  • You Charge Faster Using Home EV Charging Station

You can get your car charged between 1 and 7 hours depending on the size of the electric vehicle charging station you install. Using the home EV charging station is faster than the mains that takes minimum of 6 hours to fully charge and the public charging points are slower except if you use a rapid charging point and this is not quite expensive. Hence, you charge within a reasonable amount of time at a cheaper rate when you install a home EV charging station.

  • Home EV Charging Stations Tend to have Positive Effect on your Battery Life

Just like every other batteries, an electric car battery also drains and loses its efficiency with charging over time. It is better to have your electric car almost fully charged rather than having it charged fully. This will aid the battery life and it is easier for you to do this when you are in charge of charging your electric vehicle yourself.

These are the reasons you may consider to go for a home EV charging station. If you have decided to get yourself one, you will be confronted with questions on how to install it. Here is the answer to your question.

How to Install your Home EV Charging Station

There are three types of electric car charging stations and each of them has their method of installation.

How to Install a Level 1 Electric Vehicle Charger

The Level 1 EV chargers is the easiest to install. It comes with your electric vehicle and does not require any spectacular method of installation.  You are required to simply plug your Level 1 charger into a standard 120 volt wall outlet and it is ready for use. The Level 1 charging system does not have any extra costs associated with an installation, and you can set the entire charging system up without a professional.

How to Install a Level 2 Electric Vehicle Charger

Level 2 EV charger uses 240 volts of electricity unlike the level 1. This gives it its ability of offering faster charging time. However, it requires a special installation procedure as a standard wall outlet only provides 120 volts. Installing a level 2 EV charger requires you to run 240 volts from your breaker panel to the location of your charger, it requires a double-pole circuit breaker that will help in doubling the circuit voltage to 240 volts and it requires a 4-strand cable. The technicality involved in the installation of the level 2 EV charger makes it a necessity for you to hire a professional electrician for the installation.

How to Install a Level 3 Electric Vehicle Charger

The Level 3 charging stations also called DC Fast Chargers are not for home installation. They are primary meant for use in commercial and industrial settings, as they are usually expensive and require specialised and powerful equipment for their operation. The level 3 EV charger requires the help of a professional electrician for its installation.

Can I get an OLEV grant with a smart home EV charger?

The OLEV grant a government founded scheme and is run by the Office of Low Emission Vehicles. This grant offers you £500 towards the funding of the installation and purchase of an electric car charger. Although there are certain requirements to meet, to qualify for the OLEV grant.

Such as:

  • You must have purchased an OLEV eligible electric car or plugin hybrid from 01/10/2016 onwards. The car will still be eligible if it is older then this date, they just requested that the vehicle has been purchased since this date.
  • You must have private off-street parking, where a charging cable will not cross a pedestrian pavement. The grant will only cover people with off-street parking.
  • Your smart home EV charger must be OLEV approved. All the smart EV chargers we provide are OLEV approved but if you require a detailed list click the link here
  • The date of installation should not be more than four months prior to the date of the delivery of the electric vehicle. So, if your electric car is a few months away from being collected or delivered, you might have to wait until closer to this time to apply for the OLEV grant.
  • Finally, you must use an OLEV approved installer. It will be the installer of the charging station that will be able to claim the grant on your behalf.
Do you need a specific electric car to claim it?

Yes, you need to have an OLEV approved vehicle to be eligible for the grant. There is a full list of Electric Vehicles that are eligible for the OLEV grant here. As you probably expect the majority of popular UK car brands are listed as eligible including Audi, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Volvo and much more. View the full list here: Vehicles eligible for the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme. The way the government decides if the cars are eligible relates to CO2 emissions. The vehicle must emit less than 75 grams per kilometer of CO2, this means that all fully electric cars automatically become eligible for the grant, but also some hybrid cars are able to qualify for the grant.

If you are interested in claiming the OLEV grant, it would be best to speak to the installers of your smart home EV charger. They will help guide you through the process.

“Tethered” or “Untethered” Smart Home EV Charger?

For owners of electric cars, the addition of a home charging station installed on the driveway or in the garage makes absolute sense, rather than the older, basic three-pin plug route. better still, make it a smart charger and they become more versatile and useful. The only one issue, as always with new technology, is getting to grips with what it all means and that includes the terminology.

For example, it is possible to buy charging stations that are untethered or have a charging cable already attached. Why should they be different; isn’t it better if one size fits all? Not necessarily. Having a choice means being able to choose a method that ideally suits the user.

An untethered unit (also sometimes known as a socket-only or universal charger) means there is no charging cable attached to the unit or supplied with it. The beauty of this is that the user can utilise both Type 1 and Type 2 connecting cables to suit the EV. This is especially useful when changing vehicle for a different brand. In this case however it will be necessary to purchase these leads separately unless they are part of the original equipment. If this sounds like too much hassle then the choice of a smart charging station that comes with a cable attached, or tethered, is an alternative.

Can I Fit a Smart Home Charger Myself?

The good news is that for new installations, an OLEV (Office for Low Emission vehicles) grant towards the cost can be claimed from the UK Government. Claimants must prove ownership of the vehicle, purchased or leased; but that’s straightforward. As of 1st April 2020, the grant has been lowered from a maximum of £500 down to a maximum of £350: Still, every little helps; but there’s a catch. The grant can only be claimed by installers authorised by OLEV and that have approval from a charge point manufacturer to install their accredited equipment.

Essentially this means that if an owner self-installs a home charging point, then the grant cannot be claimed. Obviously, money will be saved by taking the DIY route, and it is possible, but this really is a job for a fully qualified electrician. It’s not complex but expert knowledge of how a household electrical system works is a must. If in doubt, get an authorised spark in and claim that grant.

  1. Most EVSE manufacturers sell both 16 and 25 foot chargers, with the longer chargers usually priced a little bit higher. When considering EVSE cable length, imagine where your car and the charging station will be positioned. Ask yourself: How far from the charging station will the car’s outlet be?

  2. Considering the amount of big brands in the automotive market its amazing that you don’t see the larger brands competing such as BMW, Mercedes Etc. They are speaking to the electric car customer at there first interaction point how they are not dominating this market is unbelievable.

Is there any reason why the large automotive brands haven’t enter this market place?
