Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Nissan Leaf accepts up to 6.6 kW on AC. A British home supply is single phase and stops at 7.4 kW, so this is the fastest charge the car can accept anywhere. A three-phase cable has no extra phases to use and costs more for nothing.

Check which Leaf you have. The 2018 on Leaf uses a Type 2 inlet and takes the cable above. The 2011 to 2017 car is Type 1, and the Type 1 to Type 2 lead on this page is the one it needs.

A Nissan Leaf charging cable is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead on every Leaf sold in the UK since 2018, from the 40 kWh car and the 62 kWh Leaf e+ to the third generation Leaf on sale since 2026 in Engage, Engage+, Advance and Evolve grades. What changed over those years is not the plug but the onboard charger behind it: 6.6 kW on the 2018 to 2024 car, 11 kW on the new one, which takes 7.4 kW from a home wallbox. Nissan's UK specification page lists 11 kW on every 2026 grade and both batteries, and quotes 6.6 kW for the 40 kWh and 62 kWh models before it. The one Leaf that does not take this cable is the 2011 to 2017 first generation, which has a Type 1 inlet; the Type 1 to Type 2 version on this page exists for that car. The year decides the plug shape, the charger decides which amperage is worth paying for.

Which Nissan Leaf charging cable type is worth the money

Right on every Leaf: the 32A single phase cable. The option list calls it 32amp (7.2kW); it carries 7.4 kW. A 2026 Leaf takes all of it from a domestic wallbox and fills a 75 kWh battery in 11 hours 30 minutes. A 2018 to 2024 Leaf draws 6.6 kW through the same lead, where its charger stops, and a 40 kWh car is full in 6 hours 45 minutes. Cheaper and genuinely slower on a 6.6 kW Leaf: the 16A cable. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), it holds the car to 3.7 kW and leaves almost 3 kW of the Leaf's own charger unused, stretching the 40 kWh car from 6 hours 45 minutes to 12 hours, and a seven hour off-peak window puts back about 112 miles instead of about 199. It only matches the 32A on a first generation car with the standard 3.3 kW charger. Works, but no faster: the 32A three phase cable, sold as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW). On a 2018 to 2024 Leaf the extra cost buys no extra power anywhere, because the 6.6 kW charger is single phase and cannot use the extra two cores even at a workplace post. On the 2026 Leaf the 11 kW is a three phase rating, so at a house the car is held to 7.4 kW by the single phase power supply rather than by its charger; the three phase lead earns its premium only at a workplace or public 22 kW charge point, where a 75 kWh Leaf pulls 11 kW and finishes in 7 hours 45 minutes. Whichever amperage you pick, the Type 2 to Type 2 cable is also the one you carry for an untethered public charge point; rapid chargers are tethered and make the connection with their own lead. For a 2011 to 2017 Leaf, the Type 1 to Type 2, 32A suits a car with the optional 6.6 kW charger and the Type 1 to Type 2, 16A one with the standard 3.3 kW unit; a time to full of about 5 hours on the dash of a 30 kWh car at a 7 kW wallbox means 6.6 kW.

Cable length depends on the generation, because Nissan moved the socket. On every 2011 to 2024 Leaf the flap is in the middle of the nose of a 4.49 metre car, so drive in forwards and the socket stops within arm's reach of a wallbox on either wall of a single drive, and 5 metres does the job. Reverse in and the socket faces the road, a car length from the house, and you want the 10 metre lead. The 2026 Leaf moves the flap to the front wing, on the right according to EV Database, so confirm on your own vehicle; a wallbox on the wall opposite the flap is a 10 metre job even nose first. The 15 metre and 20 metre cables, both 32A single phase, cover street parking, a wallbox on a detached garage, or a tandem drive with another car in front.

What is in the boot depends on who owned the car before you. Nissan's UK specification sheet lists a 5 metre Mode 3 32A cable as standard on the 2026 Leaf, a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, and nothing for a household socket. For the 2018 to 2024 car, Zapmap's guide says a Type 2 lead and a 3-pin lead were usually both supplied new, but buyers of a used electric car report every combination, including neither. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, listed as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW), fills that gap: 2.3 kW from any 13 amp socket, about 10 miles of range an hour on a 40 kWh Leaf and 12 on the 2026 car, with a Type B RCD in the in-line control unit and a dial to lower the current on an older ring main. Overnight at a relative's house that is roughly 70 miles into a 40 kWh Leaf. A Type 1 to 3-Pin version does the same for the 2011 to 2017 car.

The 52 kWh version of the 2026 Leaf, offered in Engage and Advance grades from July 2026 with up to 280 miles WLTP, has the same 11 kW charger and fills in 8 hours on the 32A single phase cable, 5 hours 30 minutes at an 11 kW post and 16 hours 15 minutes on the 16A lead, adding about 39 miles an hour at 7.4 kW. First generation cars carry a Type 1 inlet and predate the WLTP test, so there is no honest miles per hour figure for them; a 30 kWh car with the 6.6 kW option takes about 4 hours 45 minutes on the Type 1 to Type 2 32A cable, and a 24 kWh car with the standard 3.3 kW charger about 7 hours 30 minutes on either Type 1 lead. Usable capacities in the tables are EV Database measurements, Nissan quotes 75 kWh and 52 kWh usable for the new models, and the WLTP miles are Nissan UK's figures for the longest legged grade of each battery. As with any electric vehicle, sub-zero nights and a dual carriageway commute both pull the miles per hour figure down.

Which Nissan Leaf charging cable fits my year of car?

A Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable fits every Nissan Leaf registered from 2018 onwards, including the 40 kWh car, the 62 kWh Leaf e+ and the 2026 third generation Leaf, and a Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable fits the 2011 to 2017 first generation. Compatibility is decided by the year, not the trim, and no adapter is supplied in either direction. Both connectors sit behind the flap in the nose on the older cars, so the flap position tells you nothing; the pin count does. Seven pins with two flat edges on top is Type 2, five pins with a latch is Type 1.

Is the 16A cable enough for a 6.6 kW Nissan Leaf?

It works, but it leaves nearly 3 kW of the Nissan Leaf's own charger unused. A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable holds a 6.6 kW Leaf to 3.7 kW, so the 40 kWh battery takes 12 hours from empty instead of 6 hours 45 minutes on the 32A cable, and a seven hour cheap rate window recovers about 112 miles rather than about 199. On a car that can only ever take 6.6 kW, the 32A single phase lead is the one purchase that unlocks all of it.

Does the 2026 Nissan Leaf charge faster at home than the 2018 to 2024 car?

Yes, by 0.8 kW. The 2026 Nissan Leaf has an 11 kW onboard charger and draws the full 7.4 kW a single phase home wallbox can supply, where a 2018 to 2024 Leaf stops at 6.6 kW. That is about 38 miles of range an hour on a 75 kWh 2026 Leaf against 28 on a 40 kWh 2018 car, and both figures come through the same 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The larger gap is at a three phase post, where the 2026 car takes 11 kW and the older car is still 6.6 kW.

Does a three phase cable do anything on a Nissan Leaf?

On a 2018 to 2024 Nissan Leaf, nothing, anywhere: its 6.6 kW charger is single phase, so a 32A three phase cable delivers the same 6.6 kW as the 32A single phase cable at home and at a workplace. On a 2026 Nissan Leaf the three phase cable pays only at a genuine three phase supply, where the car reaches its 11 kW ceiling and a 75 kWh battery fills in 7 hours 45 minutes instead of 11 hours 30 minutes. On a driveway both cables give a 2026 Leaf 7.4 kW.

How long a cable does a Nissan Leaf need with the socket in the nose?

Five metres covers most single drives on a 2011 to 2024 Nissan Leaf, because the socket is in the centre of the front bumper and a car driven in forwards stops with it a metre or so from a wallbox on either side wall. Ten metres is the answer when you reverse in, when the Leaf parks behind another car, or when the wallbox is on a garage rather than the house. The 2026 Nissan Leaf moves the socket to the front wing, so for that car measure from the flap to the charger with the car parked the way you leave it, and choose 10 metres if the run crosses the front of the car.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
